Jackie Hill Perry – Gay Girl Good God review is a review I’m a little intimidated to write. The topic and the content of it is controversial in the world where minority has become the loudest. However, I believe the book is an important and insightful read and should be spoken about.
What is Controversial About Gay Girl Good God?
We’ve all heard about conversion therapy aimed at the LGBTQ+ community and the damage it’s done. So, to have a book claim that acting on your homosexual nature is a sin – is controversial. I am sure it is also painful for LGBTQ+ members to read.
Gay Girl Good God – What Is It About?
I am not one for spoilers, so I’ll try make sure this doesn’t give much away. The book is basically Jackie’s life story. When she realised she was gay, her relationships with men, and most importantly, her relationship with God. She tells the story of how she got saved and the convictions that came with it. Jackie also tells the story of meeting her husband and how that relationship developed into what it is now.
Why I Would Recommend Gay Girl Good God
Despite the title and the main topic being homosexuality in the context of Christianity, I think the book is so much more than that. I think the way she addresses our sinful nature applies to all sin and can be applied by anyone reading the book. The book backs up every claim about God with Bible references. Jackie is a poet and that is clearly seen in the way she writes and expresses herself.
My Favourite Topics in Gay Girl Good God by Jackie Hill Perry
Tiny *spoiler alert* here. A few of my favourite things Jackie discusses is the effect trauma can have on our view of people, particularly people of the opposite sex if it was inflicted by them. How are you supposed to love a man if a man has never loved you? Another topic that felt very familiar, was what Jackie calls the Heterosexual Gospel. The easiest way to explain it is that sometimes, churches seem to esteem heterosexual marriage above salvation. They paint it as the highest purpose of a Christian’s life. Surprisingly, or maybe not so, I realised I’ve seen that done in churches I’ve gone to. I’ve heard pastors say that they prefer to appoint people who are married into leadership positions. But the Bible clearly states that to be single and devoted to God means your priority is God and nothing else to distract you (1 Corinthians 7:32-35).
Final Thoughts
The final thing I have to say in this Jackie Hill Perry – Gay Girl Good God review is that I highly recommend it. Don’t just look at it as a story of a former gay girl who got to know God. The book is so much more than that. It is a story of how God transforms people, a story of how He speaks to people in such powerful yet subtle ways. I found the book insightful, challenging, beautifully written and encouraging. One of my main takeaways is to keep praying for the people in my life who don’t yet know God. Where I think a door is closed, God just might have a way of reaching those people.
