Things to do in Klaipeda

Things To Do In Klaipeda

If you’re looking for things to do in Klaipeda – you’ve come to the right place. I spent the first 18 years of my life living there, and recently took my fiance there, so I had to act like a tourist guide. I’ll tell you about places to visit, as well as places to eat that you can’t miss!

Places to Visit in Klaipeda

The River Dane

Klaipedos Meridianas

If you want a nice stroll, head to the city centre to see the embankment of the  River Dane. It is adorned by a ship that is considered to be the symbol of the city – Meridianas. The ship also has a restaurant inside it. I’ve never been inside myself, but it looks fairly priced and has good reviews.

Klaipeda Concert Hall

If you’re looking for something cultural to do in the evening, check out Klaipeda Concert Hall programme before you go. While most concerts are classical music, Lithuanians really love jazz as well. We ended up going to an outdoor Jazz concert which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Best Beaches in Klaipeda

Giruliai Beach

If you’re heading there in the summer, I have a couple of favourite beaches to suggest. First one is Giruliai. It’s far enough from the main beaches of Melnrage which makes it less busy, and its sand is cleaner as well. You can get there easily by public transport.

Smiltynė

If you’re looking for a pristine beach, get the ferry to Smiltyne. The ferry goes every 30 minutes and the journey only takes 5 minutes. You’ll find white-sand beaches, some snack shops along the way, and a Sea Museum and Dolphinarium if you’d like to do more than sunbathe. Tickets to both of these are

and a Sea Museum and Dolphinarium if you’d like to do more than sunbathe. Tickets to both of these are 8 Euros per person.

Olando Kepurė

Olando Kepure Sunset

Olando Kepurė can only be reached by car, which is where CityBee can become handy if you have a license. It’s the easiest way to rent a car that I’ve ever heard of. All you need to do is download the app and prove you have a license. The price of the trip is calculated by adding the time of use of the car and the kilometers driven.

Now back to Olango Kepure – it is the most stunning beach to come watch the sunset from. You’ll walk through the forest to get to a viewpoint.

Places to Eat in Klaipėda

Bandelių Kepyklėlė

One thing Lithuania has plenty of is bakeries. I grew up eating pastries that are hand-made. My favourite spot growing up, which is still there and thriving, is in Janonio street. Bandelių Kepyklėlė (Pastry bakery) is very affordable, loved by the locals, and has plenty of sit-in space as well.

Cremia Bakery Gelateria

Cremia Klaipeda

Now for a more posh bakery, you absolutely cannot miss Cremia bakery. Their baked goods are definitely on the more expensive side, but so worth it. A wide range of flavours and all of them absolutely delightful.

Senamiestis

Now for more solid food, you have to come to Senamiestis in Kepėjų street 13. And once you’re here, try their staple – cheese fingers. This sounds very basic, but they’re the best cheese fingers you’ll ever have. And here’s a warning. Although it sounds like a starter, if you order a full-sized portion, that will serve two people and you won’t need to order anything else. You may still have room for dessert, but definitely not a main.

Kukudra

For Lithuanian staples, our family’s favourite has always been Kukudra. Unfortunately, that’s another place you’d have to rent a car to get to. If you can – I highly recommend it.

Final Thoughts

I’m sure there are many more places to see and things to do, but for now this is my quick summary of places we managed to visit over 3 days of being there. If you have any questions or would like to share your own suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below so people know of things to do in Klaipeda.
